Barcelona | 1st prize competition 2022 | Superblock masterplan
The design of the new square, in the cross between Consell de Cent and Comte Borrell, is intended as an urban platform to accommodate the active use of the weekly Sunday market and the celebration of neighbourhood festivities. The design is approached in a radial and systematic way: a large natural stone platform houses 8 jacaranda trees at its heart, which generate a wide central canopy and rest area. In contrast to the center, the perimeter ring of existing trees is reinforced in majority by shrubs and more small trees. The outside seating areas of the bars are located in this area. Between the centre and this green perimeter there are road traffic flows. All stormwater drainage is produced by bio-retention, favoring the growth of greenery to allow more shade, thus reducing the heat island effect in the center of the city.
