Molins de Rei, Barcelona | project in progress | 1st prize competition 2022
A tower for 35 social housing units is located in in a development area in the metropolitan area of Barcelona, bounding with Collserola mountain and in front of the train line. The 10-storeys high building responds to its metropolitan status as an urban landmark through a regular and systematized façade composition.
Each storey of the building has four corner housing units. The housing typology is compact and effective: the rooms are voluntarily non-hierarchical and communicate clearly with each other. A large interior terrace-gallery provides a generous semi-outdoor space; it also has a climatic function as a thermal cushion and offers an «extra» living space for users. There are also communal spaces such as laundries and polyvalent spaces, both located at the street level with direct exterior access.
In a particularly delicate moment regarding energy supplies, there is a commitment to a design a maximally passive dwelling that requires minimal active energy input. The terrace-gallery room benefits interior climate control. Also materials are thoroughly studied to minimize losses through facades and roofs.
A prefabricated CLT wooden structure is chosen, posing a constructive challenge due to the building’s height. Wood is a well-balanced material in terms of CO2 emissions, lightweight, and allows the integration of prefabrication into the construction system. Prefabrication reduces errors, provides more control in construction, and speeds up the building process.
The 1/75 scale project model is part of a traveling exhibition curated by Post Like, showing work of selected young catalan offices. It has been exhibited at the COAC in Barcelona (fall 2023), at the Casa de la Arquitectura in Madrid (winter 2023-2024) and at the Aedes Gallery in Berlin (spring 2024).
